ImageOur friends at CDR-Zone have published an article discussing the quality issues of recordable media, and a list of media which they have divided into quality categories: Premium, Recommended, Budget and Landfill. Of course it is very difficult to produce a definitive list, as the performance of the media is always affected by the test environment.

DVD recorders perform differently. One disc can burn perfectly well in one recorder and fail totally in another. Some recorders need top quality media to deliver good results, while some recorders can adabt to the conditions and make decent burn even to a lower quality disc. An up-to-date firmware plays a key role in getting the best of your burner.

Their list is interesting, although there are quite a few entries that we would disagree with. Most importantly they do a good job pointing out the premium quality and the landfill quality media accurately. The list will at least help you to avoid the worst brands in the industry.
