Blu-ray and HD-DVD probed by EU antitrust officials E-mail

ImageThe so called next generation of has not even started, but the EU antitrust officials are already looking into the licensing strategies of HD-DVD and Blu-ray. The officials have approached both parties with a letter to request information about the licensing. At this point the EU is not yet starting a formal investigation, but they want to learn more whether the licensing terms could break the European Union rules for competition.

Sony said it was cooperating with the Commission.

"There are no indications of any complaint, nor of any antitrust concerns on the part of the Commission or anyone else," the company said in a statement.

The makers of the DVD formats can license their products to both hardware manufacturers wanting to make new DVD players and DVD producers themselves. The Commission declined to say whether it was looking into a specific catergory of licences or all.
