Verbatim is one of the best brands in the world. They have always been very fast to deliver new DVDR/DVDRW products to the market. We had a chance to review the 16X DVD-R.
The test method
In this test we burned a number of discs using the Pioneer DVR-109 with the latest firmware (v1.50). This is just a preview for this disc (only one recorder used). Your results may vary depending on your recorder, but verbatim has proven to be one of the most compatible manufacturers. We will add more results later. For error rate analysis we used Kprobe software and the LiteON drive. This test method is not scientifically valid or 100% accurate, but usually gives a good idea of the quality. The discs were also tested in various playback devices, including DVD-ROMs, a Playstation 2 and DVD players.
The Company Hype
The Verbatim website gives us the following statement:
Verbatim is continuing to provide consumers with greater flexibility and time saving solutions. Users can now burn 4.7GB of data in just 5 minutes!
It is through the development of the proprietary recording dye, Metal AZO, that Verbatim was able to push ahead with 2x media. That development process has continued over the last few years and has resulted in Advanced AZO, which was initially used on 4x media and now confidently used on 8x media. The latest 16x media uses Advanced AZO+.
The product
Verbatim 16X DVD-R has seven different packaging types: 100/50/25/10 pack spindles and 10/5/1 Slim/Jewel Cases. We had a 25 pack spindle. The disc itself has a silver top coating.
Kprobe gives us the following information:
Pioneer DVR-109 4X Speed
As you can see the results are excellent! PI average is 1.21 and PIF average is 0.01 which are very good results. Even the Max PI/PIF is very low. Well lets see if the increase of the writing speed would effect to the results.
Pioneer DVR-109 6X Speed
No effect at all. The results are still perfect. Very promising results at this point.
Pioneer DVR-109 8X Speed
Results are even getting better with higher writing speed. Very good results again.
Pioneer DVR-109 12X Speed
Nothing new. Excellent results. This seem to be very good disc. Pioneer DVR-109 seems to like AZO+ dye.
Pioneer DVR-109 16X Speed
Again we have a perfect results. There seems to be no effect to the results if you burn this disc with 4X, 6X, 8X, 12X or 16X speed. Good job Verbatim!
