It has been long time since our latest DVDR review. Now we finally had time to review the Maxell 16X DVD-R. Thanks to Maxell Finland to gave this opportunity by sending some samples! More Maxell DVD reviews coming soon. Lets see how good is their 16X DVD-R!
The product
Our test discs were in the jewel cases. The disc itself has a gold top coating. Very good looking disc! The discs carry a MXL RG04 Manufacturer ID.

The test method
In this test we burned a number of discs using the Pioneer DVR-110 (Multi), HP 840i and BenQ DW1640 with the latest firmware. Your results may vary depending on your recorder. For error rate analysis we used nero CD/DVD Speed software and the BenQ DW1640 DVD writer. This test method is not scientifically valid or 100% accurate, but usually gives a good idea of the quality.
Performance using Pioneer DVR-110
Pioneer DVR-110 did not like these discs at all. The PIF rates were too high. It seems that the firmware is not tuned for these discs. The PIE rates are excellent though. DVD player did play the disc without any problems.

Performance using BenQ DW1640
If the Pioneer did not like the Maxell discs, BenQ really loved those! Just look at the results. Very good PIE and PIF rates. Good job BenQ.

Performance using HP 840i
There were some problems with HP 840i. It seems that there is the same PIF issue as with Pioneer DVR-110. PIE rates are excellent but PIF rates are terrible. This disc also played without any problems in the DVD player though.

Conclusions
Well it seems that some DVDRW writers may have some serious problems with these discs (firmware is not tuned for these discs). BenQ was the only writer in this test that manage to write these discs at 16X speed with good results. However these discs were little disappointment to us. Maxell should be the "high quality" brand.
